If you know nothing about IT, programming and SEO, these tips will help you to fix and avoid common mistakes on your website.
I constantly work on my blog improvement and by doing this learned which mistakes people usually make when creating their blogs and even websites for business. As soon as I view any website, I can the drawbacks straight away and analyse how to make improvements, so I feel like I have to share experience to make your life easier :)
These simple steps will help you to increase your traffic, attract more readers and followers and, perhaps, generate leads and sales.
You do not even need to know much about IT and programming to easily improve your website and optimise it for the search engines (yes, this is about SEO).
It takes a bit of a time, but once you understand how to manage your website better, you will do these steps automatically. This will save your time in the future.
There are tons of tutorials on how to do this, but this is what worked for me.Start with your existing posts and eliminate following common mistakes.
Easy steps you need to follow to improve your website
1. Check the image titles.
You can attract more traffic to your website just renaming your images. If a person is looking for something online, the image search will lead to your website and your business. Include your keywords or phrases in the image titles. So, check your images and be sure to include your key words or phrases in the titles.
Many of your images might have titles such as ‘IMG_346289’ or any other irrelevant caption. Make sure the title relates to your post and include key words or phrases that will lead people to your website page and to your business respectively.
Do this step and improve the chances for your image to appear in Goggle search (images) and for everyone to see it. For example, I named this image “how to improve your blog”, because that is what I am writing about and this photo illustrates one of the steps. Alternatively, you could name it ‘how to change photo captions on your website’ and it would be even more relative to the photo description.
Ideally, you will need name the image properly before you upload it on your website – this is a tip for the future.
2. Check and fix the outgoing links
If you link to any external websites, especially if you link a lot (for example, if you review some products, like many bloggers do) be very aware of the links, because your website might appear as ‘spammy’. A while ago I was very surprised when I found out that it looks like I sell the links on my site, when I didn’t have any idea that you can actually can sell the links!
The solution is: if you insert external links, make sure to add a ‘nofollow’ attribute. Here is how you can do it:
Open the text editing (hit the ‘text’ on the right top corner of your post) and look for the external links. If there is too much information and you can’t find them, just hit CTRL+F and type http in the search window. All the links highlighted. Then go through each link and insert this: rel=”nofollow”, just copy and paste it ; it is going to look like this : <a rel=”nofollow” “http://thelink.com”>.
You will only need to do this to the external links, search engines will disregard them links and your rating won’t be hurt.
3. Add more value.
Everyone who knows about online marketing, will tell you to write longer posts. How long is the ideal post? Someone say more than 800 words, and others will say, 2000 words. Anyway, longer posts are good for you and for the search engines. However, it is not always good for your visitors and readers.
Do you like to read long posts? It’s likely that you do not. Hence, create a few detailed posts, such as lists or detailed description of something, or maybe a ‘How-To’ tutorial. But make sure you break your post into sections. Use bullet points, insert some relevant images and quote or highlight the most important points.
Do this to help change the readers’ perception, because long posts are normally boring. This doesn’t mean you need your every post to be 800 words. Just post these kind of posts from time to time to help search engines rate your website and improve readership.
4. Check for broken links
Broken links damage your reputation, slow down your website and make no sense obviously.
At least you will need to hide these from Google so they don’t drag your rating down or create a mess on your website. There are a few few online services that will check your site for broken links, such as Broken links check, or Dr Link check or WordPress plugin or any other service that you prefer.
I often refer to my Google Webmaster tools to see the stats, including website mistakes and broken links. Go to your Webmaster Tools, confirm your right for the website if you have not done this yet.
Then pick ‘Delete URL’ and paste your broken link, thus you will close it from Google bots.
5. Index your new post in Google
6. Create better URLs
When creating a new post or a page, make sure to create a clear and descriptive relevant URL.
How do you change a current URL? (note: If the post is already popular, it is not always a good idea to change it)
Go to your website admin. Under the title of a post, you will see ‘Permalink’. Click ‘edit’ and type a word or a phrase that will help people to find your post if they are looking for something specific. If it is a phrase, it is important to type “-” between the words to indicate a space.
In the example above, ‘apps2’ link extension is an example of how you should not do it.
This post is about smartphone apps that I suggest downloading to edit your images. So the URL here should be, for instance, ‘best-apps-for-edit-photos-on-mobile”. Or “popular-filters-apps”, “hipster-photo-effects” or something like this. I will leave it to your creativity.
7. Make sure your website is mobile-friendly
You can simply update your WordPress theme if your Website does not support mobile version.
How to check whether your website supports mobile version? Just drag your window to reach an approximate mobile screen size. If the page is still proportional to the window, you should be fine, but if it is not and you can only see the part of the page, there is an issue.
The rating of my website went down once, just because I had an old WordPress theme. As soon as I changed it, the site start to recover the ratings. People browse the web a lot on mobile, so stay in trend and don’t lose your visitors just because of this mistake.
These are the first mistakes you should eliminate to improve your website and as a result, your traffic. It will take time, especially if you have a lot of pages. If your website is new, then you will just be a pro in creating optimized posts and I wish you huge success with your website.
